History

Iconoclasm may be carried out by people of a different religion, but is often the result of sectarian disputes between factions of the same religion.

The Roman Empire's polytheist state religion's images were destroyed during the process of Christianisation.

In Europe during the Protestant Reformation and the religious conflicts following there were several outbreaks, with Protestants destroying Catholic or sometimes Protestant imagery.

In the world of Islam, there have been various periods of iconoclasm against images of other religions (eg Christianity, Buddhism, etc.) and those produced within Islam itself. The missing nose on the Great Sphinx of Giza is attributed to iconoclasm by a Sufi Muslim.

During and after the Russian Revolution, there was widespread destruction of religious and secular imagery.

dogmadic: adj. Loss of mental power or dementia suffered by dogs. From OE words "dog" and "mad" + the Latin suffix "-ic", pertaining to.

dogmatic: adj.
1. Relating to, characteristic of, or resulting from dogma.
2. Characterized by an authoritative, arrogant assertion of unproved or unprovable principles.
[Late Latin dogmaticus, from Greek dogmatikos, from dogma, dogmat-, belief; see dogma.]

" "

Benjamin Franklin: "The way to see by faith is to shut the eye of reason." and "Lighthouses are more helpful then churches."

Frank Lloyd Wright : "I believe in God, only I spell it Nature."

Edgar Allan Poe :
"No man who ever lived knows any more about the hereafter ... than you and I; and all religion ... is simply evolved out of chicanery, fear, greed, imagination and poetry."

Napoleon Bonaparte: "Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich."

Samuel Clemens "Mark Twain": "If there is a God, he is a malign thug."

Vincent Van Gogh: "I can very well do without God both in my life and in my painting, but I cannot, suffering as I am, do without something which is greater than I am, which is my life, the power to create."

Thomas Edison: "Religion is all bunk."

James Madison, American president :
"During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What has been its fruits? More or less, in all places, pride and indolence in the clergy; ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry, and persecution."

Irving Berlin—the legendary songwriter who gave us "God Bless America" and "White Christmas"—was an atheist who hated Christmas.

Abraham Lincoln as a young man was an avid anti-christian and most likely an atheist. In his later years, he came to believe in God, but was still anti-religious in the sense that he rejected organized religion.

Katherine Hepburn : "I'm an atheist, and that's it. I believe there's nothing we can know except that we should be kind to each other and do what we can for each other."

Thomas Jefferson: "The Christian god is a three headed monster; cruel, vengeful and capricious. If one wishes to know more of this raging, three headed beast-like god, one only needs to look at the caliber of people who say they serve him. They are always of two classes: fools and hypocrites."

Iconoclasm

Iconoclasm, Greek for "image-breaking", is the deliberate destruction (or defamation) of important symbolic images (or icons) recognized within a culture, religion, or society. People who engage in or support iconoclasm are called iconoclasts, a term that has come to be applied figuratively to any person who breaks or disdains established dogmata or conventions.

In the Name of...

"Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and burn their sacred poles"(Exodus, 34, 13)
Many of the defaced or beheaded statues of Greek and Roman art known today were the product of Christian iconoclasm. The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, was one of many pagan and Jewish buildings which would soon be destroyed by Christian violence, both official and mob-related.

Lisa the Iconoclast

Homer: [ringing bell] Hear ye, hear ye! Ye olde town crier proclaimed crappy by all! Chooseth Homer Simpson, and he shalt rock thy world!
Chief Wiggum: My God, he is fabulous!
Principal Skinner: He's embiggened that role with his cromulent performance.
("Lisa the Iconoclast" is the sixteenth episode of The Simpsons' seventh season.)

Twilight of the Capitalist Gods

The avarice that was practiced to an excess in the last few years when financial assets assumed more significance than real assets has brought Capitalism to its knees. The irony of the success of the Chinese economy, constrained by the "failed ideology" of Communism, could cause one the question the validity of one of the West's most cherished modern dogmas, the temple of consumption.

The Big Bang

Upon careful examination of the entries and accompanying definitions, one can accurately assert that “chicken” is found on page 232 in the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, while “egg” is not found until page 398. Therefore, the chicken clearly comes before egg.

Iconoclash

Blasphemer!, Infidel!, Sacrilege!, Profananity! cry the iconolaters.
The iconoclasts seek to destroy the totem poles, expose ideologies, and disabuse the idolaters. If images are so dangerous, why do we have so many of them? If they are innocent, why do they trigger so many and such enduring passions? Such is the enigma. What has been most violent? The religious urge to destroy idols to bring humanity to the right cult of the true God or the anti-religious urge to destroy the sacred icons and bring humanity to its true senses? An iconoclash indeed.
